Pack and Travel With a CPAP Machine

How to Pack and Travel With a CPAP Machine

Traveling with your little one can be exciting, but it may also feel stressful when respiratory equipment is part of the plan. You may wonder whether you packed everything, how the equipment will fit into the trip, or what you will do if plans change.

Those feelings are completely understandable. With a little preparation, you can help your child continue their familiar care routine while your family is away from home.

Start Preparing Early

Try to begin planning a few days before your trip. This gives you time to check the equipment, gather supplies, and ask questions without feeling rushed.

Talk with your child’s clinician when needed, especially if you are flying, traveling for an extended period, or have questions about your child’s care while away. Continue using the CPAP machine according to your child’s prescribed care plan and the instructions provided by the clinician and equipment manufacturer.

Use a CPAP Packing Checklist

A simple checklist can make packing feel more manageable. Your list may include the CPAP machine, mask, headgear, tubing, power cord, filters, humidifier chamber, and any other supplies your child regularly uses.

Before packing, inspect the mask, tubing, and connections for visible wear or damage. Turn on the machine to make sure it is working as expected, and place everything together in its protective case. Make sure the humidifier chamber is empty and dry before traveling.

As you prepare, Wavey has a few friendly reminders to help your family pack and travel with a CPAP machine. Watch the video below before you finish your checklist.

Keep the Equipment Close

During a road trip, place the CPAP machine somewhere secure and easy to reach. Protect it from spills, moisture, excessive heat, and heavy luggage.

When flying, keep the machine with your family instead of placing it in checked luggage. Contact the airline before departure to ask about its current procedures for traveling with medical equipment.

Keep your child’s clinician information and equipment details in your phone or inside the travel case.

Set Up Early and Leave Room for Flexibility

When you arrive, try to set up the CPAP machine before your child becomes tired. Place it on a safe, stable surface, make sure the power source is accessible, and check the mask, tubing, and connections without feeling rushed. Bringing familiar bedtime items, such as a favorite book, blanket, or stuffed animal, may also help the new space feel more comfortable.

Even with careful planning, travel may include delays, schedule changes, or a tired child. These moments do not mean you did anything wrong. Focus on keeping important supplies close and returning to familiar parts of your child’s routine when possible. The goal is not a perfect trip. It is to feel prepared, know where to turn, and help your child continue their care routine away from home.
