Of Support

October through December brings focused attention to family transitions, caregiver roles, respiratory needs, and inclusion, all of which shape how Wave and Sail help patients and caregivers feel prepared and supported for care at home.

October

Supporting Families and Transitions

Foster Family Awareness

When a child with respiratory needs enters foster or kinship care, continuity is essential. Caregivers may need training on oxygen, ventilation, suction, airway clearance, sleep therapy, or other prescribed equipment. Confirming caregiver readiness, sharing clear instructions, and coordinating equipment and supplies can help create a more confident transition home.

Lung Transplant Awareness Day | October 9

Patients preparing for or recovering from lung transplant may require oxygen, airway clearance, monitoring, or other respiratory support at home. Early equipment planning, accurate setup, caregiver education, and communication with the transplant team can help patients and families feel prepared for the next stage of care.

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

Families connected to neonatal and pediatric respiratory care may also carry experiences related to pregnancy loss, infant loss, premature birth, or intensive care. Compassionate communication allows clinicians and case managers to support each family with sensitivity while continuing to provide clear guidance for current respiratory needs and care routines.

November

Education and Caregiver Confidence

COPD Awareness Month

For adults living with COPD, respiratory support may include oxygen therapy, nebulizer treatments, ventilation, or other prescribed equipment. Coordinating equipment before discharge and reinforcing setup, cleaning, supply management, and safe use can help patients and caregivers maintain consistent routines at home.

National Family Caregivers Month

Caregivers often help manage treatments, equipment, supplies, appointments, and communication across the care team. Including caregivers in education, allowing time for hands-on practice, and confirming who to contact with questions can strengthen confidence and improve continuity after discharge.

December

Access, Inclusion, and Participation

International Day of Persons with Disabilities | December 3

Respiratory care should reflect each patient’s abilities, communication preferences, routines, and goals. Accessible education, thoughtful equipment selection, and coordination around mobility, transportation, school, work, and home life can help respiratory support fit more naturally into everyday living.
